Sean here again with an analysis and questions about the entirety of the first section which was through Benjy's point of view. It was an interesting chapter as it warmed me up to the style of the book and introduced each of the characters, conflicts and many other things that we'd be seeing throughout the book. First off lets start off with what kind of narrator Benjy is. He's an innocent character who has been afflicted with intellectual disability as it's called now and it's this fact that brings up conflict commonly throughout his character narrative. His mother first of all is commonly physically ill and whenever this is is so they send Benjy out of the house in fear that it will make her worse. Throughout his narrative as well it is common that there are time shifts but these time shifts thankfully for the readers are marked by italicizes. Anyway when these italicizes end they come back to the time that was being talked about before the shift and every time there's a shift it seems to begin with Benjy crying. I'm not sure what this is symbolic of right off the bat but it's something to keep in mind when reading the rest of the book. A major question and something i noticed constantly is why Benjy always described things by smell. There are things not many readers would interpret with smell like Winter that he would state smelled. He commonly stated how Caddy would smell like trees. Another thing is that few people really treat Benjy right and one of them is Caddy who almost always walks up to him and wraps her arms around him. Many of the other people are kind to him but continually tell him to shush as he cries. Some of the time I feel though it's just so they won't upset Benjy's mother with his crying rather than any type of general kindness. One interpretation that has been stated when talking about why Benjy cries one statement was because he had lost someone and one person that was stated was Caddy. Well that's all the analysis and questions I have for now on Benjy's chapter and I hope that it had helped those who didn't understand it as much. Sorry if I may not have addressed exactly what you wanted but I may make edits on this later that address some more questions as I go along. Hello and welcome to my blog everyone. In this blog I'll be discussing the Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner. I'm going to open up this blog by first stating some fun facts about William Faulkner to get you interested. I did some research on him and through my research on Faulkner I found some fascinating and interesting things. First of all I learned that he won two Pulitzer prizes and even the Nobel prize for Literature! That's an incredible feat. I also learned that he had created the country of Yoknapatawpha because a friend, writer Sherwood Anderson, Had suggested that Faulkner right about places and people that he was familiar with. Ever since then all of his novels and stories have taken place here. My favorite fact that I had learned about him though is that He wanted to join the military and ended up getting in and going through all the training but when he was done and got out the war had just ended. So after he recieved an honorable discharge he bought himself a uniform and a set of air force wings and wore them around frequently. Faulkner didn't want to accept his nobel prize because he felt it was his writing getting the prize not him.
